I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018 and went through all that comes with it, from surgeries, to chemo, to endless check ups that I still need to attend these days.
In 2021 I joined an exciting project launched by the Italian Fondazione Veronesi where together with other women who have gone through cancer, we train and participate in races to raise funds for women’s cancer research (Pink Ambassadors)
After being through every bit of my illness, I was happiest to know I had finally found a community that would relate to my struggles. To many’s surprise, I was sick and tired of constantly hearing "How are you?" when I felt I was only getting worse, doctors smiling and saying I had “the best type of cancer“ because the tumor could be easily removed, and hearing “It’s all okay, you’re a fighter” and thinking that if I didn’t make it, would it be because I hadn’t fought enough?
Fundraising for research is a beautiful cause mostly because you’re actively carving a space for those affected to be comfortable in.
We’re not athletes, and, if I am honest, not particularly skilled runners either, but if there’s one thing we all have, it’s persistence.
The same persistence that it is also necessary for research, to find new cures and solutions.
Which brings me to quote the Special Olympics athlete’s oath, the same one gladiators’ had before they went into battle “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”
